McGoughs funeral business was founded in Tunstall by Clement McGough, son of William Peter McGough and Ann Bould, daughter of a Birmingham purse maker. William Peter McGough owned a shop and a haulage business in Nash Peake Street. He was an independent councillor, a Justice of the Peace and a Papal Knight. McGough Street in Tunstall is named after him.

Clement McGough was one of seven children born to William and Ann, two of whom sadly died young, one as a baby and a sister at 21 years of age. Clement married Ethel Lawrence. Together they had six children, three sons and three daughters. Initially a brickmaker, he later moved to H. & R. Johnson Limited, where he served his apprenticeship in order to become a full-time factory joiner. During World War 2, he was a volunteer in the fire service.

He started the funeral business when Fr. Ryan a local Roman Catholic priest asked, while he was helping build the Sacred Heart Church, if Clement would make a coffin for a family who could not afford a funeral. Clement went further. In addition to making the coffin, he dressed up his father's horse and dray and conducted the whole funeral.
In your time of grief McGoughs are there for you, to care for you and to help you as only a caring family firm can do.   Almost unknown to himself he had gone into business as a funeral director, a fact which was announced at the next church service. Initially he continued working at H. & R. Johnson, and during this time his father helped in conducting funerals. At that time too, Ethel helped in building the business acting as a Secretary and keeping the books. Later when they married, she went into the funeral business full time, still as a Secretary and Bookkeeper. Clement was one of the first qualified Embalmers in the area in the 1950's

In addition to conducting funeral services they also provided a taxi service, taking many expectant mothers to hospital. Since then McGoughs have offered a continuing caring service to all religious persuasions and all denominations in North Staffordshire and South Cheshire.

To-day the tradition is carried on by Paul McGough, one of Clement's sons, who followed him into the business. He is ably assisted by his wife Brenda while his eldest son, Tim McGough, is the business manager. There are two daughters who, in keeping with family tradition, are members of caring professions. Tim and his wife, Jayne, have two daughters, Georgina and Sophia, and a son named Callum. Tim is a foundation governor at St. Johns School in Kidsgrove and also a junior rugby coach.
